In this tutorial, I will walk you through how to install the Tor web browser on a Ubuntu 18.04 Linux distribution as well as various configuration tweaks.
The Tor web browser allows you to bypass the standard way of browsing the internet as all your traffic is routed and encrypted through the Tor network. The reason for this is to give users supposed privacy, though there have been numerous people who have been caught running sites they shouldn’t on Tor. You also know that your browsing will be a lot slower and some sites unavailable as they may be blocked.
You can learn about the history and benefits of Tor on the Tor Wikipedia page.
Step 1: Installing Tor
We need to first update the packages and update the system with the following two commands.
apt-get -y update
apt-get -y upgrade
Next we need to add the Tor Browser repository so we can install it as follows.
Next we need to update the system again to reflect the changes as follows.
Now we can go ahead and install Tor.
apt install torbrowser-launcher
Step 2: Launch Tor
To start Tor type the following command into the console.
This will cause Tor to download the latest version and any dependencies when you run it for the first time. After this a settings window will appear, just click the “connect” button and the Tor browser will start.
If you have any specific configuration that is needed there is also a configuration button, select this to set any configurations for your system and location, such as proxy details.
Step 3: Security and Updates
The Tor browser is intended to be used as-is. This means you should not install any additional plugins or software that interferes with it. This is the easiest way to compromise the security it offers and your privacy.
Lastly, each time you run Tor it will attempt to update itself when updates or a new version is available. You can also update it by re-running the commands in Step 1 to install it.
Note, you can reverse the install at the command line too by running the following command.
apt remove torbrowser-launcher
This tutorial has walked you through how to install the Tor web browser on a Ubuntu 18.04 Linux distribution. You can now connect to the Tor network and browse the web via the Tor network.
